ESM Software Software for Materials Science

Harmonex X-ray

Harmonex X-ray automates the calculations necessary to design and run X-ray experiments. Harmonex works as an add-on to Microsoft Excel that simplifies common calculations.

Physical attenuation data in X-ray includes:

  • Linear and mass attenuation coefficients
  • Energy absorption coefficients
  • Compton, photoelectric, coherent, and pair-production cross-sections
  • Compounds using atoms per molecule or weight fraction
  • Mixtures using weight or volume fractions
  • Transmission of layers
  • X-ray tube spectra

The attenuation data are provided for x-ray energies from 100 eV to 100 MeV. Energy absorption data are from 6 keV to 100 MeV. the data are calculated from the best sources available in the research literature.

Harmonex X-ray utilizes this data within a powerful computational environment. The software is implemented using Microsoft Excel as a front end to an application server. The server accesses the database, calculates the needed parameters, and incorporates them in the spreadsheet. There you can use the powerful functions and commands of Excel to do your specific calculations. X-Ray includes functions to create professional graphs of the data and your calculated results.

The calculations can be saved as worksheets. These worksheets can implement complex algorithms as well as ordinary calculations that you do over and over. X-Ray includes a set of pre-programmed worksheets for many common calculations such as the average attenuation coefficient with an x-ray tube spectrum or the exposure rate with a Co60 source attenuated by layers of material. These can be used directly, modified for your specific calculations, or incorporated as parts of more complex calculations.

Spreadsheets can also be used as datasheets containingformulas and parameters for the calculations. For example, datasheets can contain physical data such as the composition of plastics or x-ray detectors. They can also provide energies and relative fractions of gamma rays from common radioactive isotopes. Datasheets are included with Harmonex X-ray that you can use, expand, or customize.
