HSC Chemistry is the world's most widely used computational thermochemistry application. Capabilities include calculations of mass balances, enthalpy balances, and phase equilibria in multicomponent multiphase systems. Gas-solid stability diagrams and Eh-pH diagrams can also be calculated. The diagrams generated can be edited and exported in a variety of formats. An included database of over 16,000 compounds is worth the price in and of itself.

If you are still using an older version of HSC, see the list of new features and improvements. The biggest change is the ability to access the HSC database from within Excel.

HSC Modules

The Equilibrium Module is the heart of the HSC application. HSC can calculate multicomponent, multiphase chemical equilibria for systems consisting of pure condensed phases, ideal gases, dilute aqueous solutions, and/or simple condensed phase solutions. Enter the reactants (or their equivalent chemistry), select possible reaction products/phases, specify the range of final temperatures and pressures, and calculate/graph the final equilibrium states in seconds.

The Mass/Enthalpy Balance Module calculates a heat and mass balance for a defined process. Up to 127 such balances can be calculated simultaneously. The calculations are interactive in that changing any of the input data results in an immediate recalculation. Alternatively, HSC can calculate the reaction product temperature when the reactant temperatures and external heat sources/sinks are defined. Automatic iterations of input parameters can be carried out to meet enthalpy balance targets. A new Heat Loss Module assists in the estimation of heat losses from conduction, convection, and radiation.

The Excel Module is a new set of Excel Add-In Tools that allow use of the HSC thermodynamic database directly within within Excel and independent of the HSC application itself. These functions work like normal Excel functions such as the SUM function. For example, H("FeO";500) function returns the enthalpy of FeO at 500 Kelvin.

Other modules support:

  • Tabulation/plotting of thermodymic parameters of individual compounds
  • Calculation of mineralogical and elemental compositions
  • Display of basic data of the elements
  • Convenient conversion of units

I try to maintain a list of user tips and bugs.

Here is a list of HSC licensees. If your site has an existing HSC license, it can be extended to cover another user for 20-85% of the single user price.

Finally, the shipment for each license includes one printed manual and one CD-ROM. Additional manual copies can be printed from a Word file on the CD. We can also ship additional manuals ($25) or CD's ($5) (includes shipping).
